Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his Sons by Clare Ford – Wille – Thursday 6th October 2022

Hunters in the Snow – Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Pieter Bruegel died so young, at about forty-four, but he left a lasting legacy of outstanding designs for prints and innovative paintings full of new ideas, which had great influence on his contemporaries and successors. When he died his sons, Pieter and Jan, were children and yet they both became painters. Pieter copied many of his father’s works but Jan, known as Velvet Brueghel, produced jewel-like landscapes and extraordinarily inventive flower paintings. The lecture will explore the work of this family.
