This journey through history illustrates the most magnificent examples of the British country house and considers the impact they have had on society and development. How are they to survive and evolve in the future?
It is often argued that Britain possesses the finest collection of ‘living’ stately homes in the world. It is harder to deny that they represent one of the country’s greatest asses and its greatest contribution to the decorative arts worldwide. This lecture goes back in time to explain their origins, and how country houses have evolved in the face of the changing nature of society. Anthony Russell will focus on some of the most magnificent examples to illustrate this journey through their history while considering the impact they in turn have had on society. Consideration is given to their changing roles and whether they can still exert a powerful hold on society. He will question how we should look on them today and how they are to survive and evolve in the future.
