Stratfield Saye House is a large stately home at Stratfield Saye set in the grounds of Wellington Country Park near Basingstoke. It has been the home of the Dukes of Wellington since 1817. The house is still a private home to the current 9th Duke of Wellington. It only opens a handful of days a year, where the public are allowed to visit.
We will have a guided tour of the house and be able to view the fascinating collection of paintings and furniture and see the wonderful Wellington Exhibition featuring his magnificent cast bronze funeral carriage (made from melted-down French cannons captured at the Battle of Waterloo) and charting his military and political life.
It has a Victorian garden with a collection of trees, an American garden, a summerhouse, a camellia house, a herbaceous border and a rose garden. The grave of Cophenhagen the horse Wellington rode at Waterloo is in the grounds of the estate. There is a café on site for lunch or you can bring your own and picnic in the grounds.
