With Just a Needle and Thread – Thursday 3rd April 2014

By Dr. Susan Kay-Williams

A wide ranging lecture looking at embroidery techniques through the ages – coronation regalia, Oscar dresses, religious items, etc., and focussing on the Royal School of Needlework.

This lecture focused on the work and collection of the Royal School of Needlework. It looked at the varied range of embroidery techniques including Blackwork, Whitework, Silk Shading, Jacobean Crewelwork and others that have been used in the past and are still used today by students of the school. It was an extensively illustrated lecture and Dr. Kay-Williams discussed technique in a practical way. She donated all proceeds from the lecture to the RSN.
Accompanying her talk was an exhibition of the kneelers that Sally Elliott and her team of brilliant volunteers have been making for St Albans Church, Hindhead as part of the Heritage aspect of our society.
